A Wiki site is a Web site where pages can be easily edited. It was invented by Ward Cunningham as an alternative to newsgroups, mailing lists and discussion forums (the original Wiki site can be found at WikiWikiWeb or WelcomeVisitors).

See the help page for a quick summary, or read on and navigate! If you're familiar with the site, check the news to see a summary of recent changes to the server software.

To edit a page, click the "Edit" link to the left of the top or bottom banner of each page. A form appears with the text of the page in an editable text area. Edit the text, click "Save" and see the result. To try this, you can go to the test page and modify it, or you can first see the details of how to create and edit pages.

In order to edit a page, you need to know the format used to represent pages in plain text. For example, to insert a link to another page in the same Wiki site, you just put the page name between two opening and two closing brackets, e.g. to get the following line:

see the test page.
you just input the following text:
see the [[test page]].

If the page referenced by a link does not exist, the link is nevertheless active. By clicking it, you get a form similar to the form for editing a page but in that case it lets you create a new page. In fact this is the only way to create pages! For example this fancy page does not exist. Try clicking on the link, but please don't create the page since it would break the effect for the next reader.

Wiki has more functions that you might want to learn about, such as history, changes, site map and recent changes. You can also start browsing and authoring and discover the functionalities as you go.

The administration of the server can be done on-line by the site administrator, e.g. to specify access control.

Wiki is a very open system. Anybody can author new pages. Anybody can also destroy someone else's work. Wiki users will find their own way to adapt the system to their needs but you might want know about some standard social protocols (also known as "netiquette").

If you have any comments or if you find bugs send email to mbl@lri.fr or edit the corresponding page.
